VGP 2020 Season Finale will decide the title

This year’s Mercedes-Benz Virtual GP 2020 season is coming to its end this weekend with a final team race of the season at Suzuka, Japan.

The traditional season finale is going to decide who wins the championship, with two drivers still in the hunt for the title. Currently, Simon Kovačič (Logitech CZC.cz eSuba) leads the championship, but he is still under threat from Erik Vizi (Benzina ORLEN).

While the first half of the season offered a dominant showing by Simon Kovačič, last year’s VGP2 junior champion, the second half of the season brought a very different story as Benzina ORLEN took over as the strongest team with Martin Štefanko and Erik Vizi.

Both drivers still had a chance to win the championship, but then Štefanko, the 2017 champion, was forced to miss the previous round at Indianapolis, which means it is now only up to his teammate Erik Vizi. However, the Slovak rookie is in a difficult position, as his only chance to win the championship title is to win and hope that Logitech CZC.cz eSuba car does not finish the race.

There will be two driver changes coming into the final round of the season. Michal Blažek has decided to retire from sim racing after Indianapolis, and he is going to be replaced in a MOGUL car by Karel Baško. The other change is in the Logitech CZC.cz eSuba team.

To make matters even worse for Kovačič, the championship leader won’t be joined in the car by his teammate Petr Kužela, who is forced to miss the last race of the season.

His replacement will be Ondřej Kovařčík, a professional Czech ice hockey player from HC Oceláři Třinec team, but is also a big fan of virtual racing and iRacing. And while he is pretty fast, he is still going to be a rookie.

Only 10 cars will be on the grid at Suzuka, as the 60-minute race marks the final team round of the season with driver swaps. Both drivers have to share the car and only a team with the perfect strategy and communication can win the race.

The champion is going to enjoy a Mercedes-Benz GLA-class car for one year. The season finale will be broadcasted on Sunday at 7 pm BST.
